~ Gumdrop Gems ~
1 cup butter or margarine
1 1/2 cups sifted confectioners sugar
1 t vanilla
1 egg
2 1/2 cups sifted all-purpose flour
1 t soda
1 t cream of tartar
1/2 t salt
1 cup small gumdrops, sliced, black ones removed
Preheat oven to 375F.
Cream butter, confectioners' sugar, and vanilla.
Beat in egg. Sift together flour, soda, cream of
tartar and salt. Gradually stir into creamed
mixture. Mix well. Shape dough into roll 2
inches in diameter and 12 inches long. Wrap in
waxed paper. Chill several hours or overnight.
Cut into 1/4 inch thick slices. Decorate tops
with gumdrop slices. Bake for 12 minutes or
until lightly browned. Cool slightly before
removing from pan.
Makes 4 dozen cookies

For gift giving package cookies in a ziplock bag.
Place bag of cookies in a flannel gift bag. To
make flannel gift bag, use a 10 1/2 x 25 inch piece
of flannel fabric. Matching right sides and short
edges, fold fabric in half. Using 1/4 inch seam
allowance, sew sides of bag together. Turn bag
right side out. Fringe top edge of bag. Gather
top of bag together and secure with ribbon or
raffia and add a cookie cutter. Add gift tag.
