~ Chocolate Chip Toffee Bars ~

2 1/3 cups flour
2/3 cup brown sugar, firmly packed
3/4 cup butter or margarine, softened
1 egg, slightly beaten
1 package (12 oz) semisweet chocolate chips, divided
1 cup chopped nuts
1--14 oz can sweetened condensed milk
1--10 oz pkg toffee bits, divided (see **note)

Preheat oven to 350F.
In bowl, stir together the flour and brown sugar.
Cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
Add egg and mix well. Stir in 1 1/2 cups of the
chocolate chips and the nuts. Reserve 1 1/2 cups
of this mixture. Press remaining crumb mixture
into the bottom of a 13x9 inch pan. Bake for
10 minutes. Pour sweetened condensed milk evenly
over hot crust, then top with 1 1/2 cups of the
toffee bits. Sprinkle with reserved crumb mixture
and the remaining chocolate chips over top. Return
to oven and bake for 25 minutes or until golden
brown. Sprinkle with remaining 1/4 cup toffee bits.
Cool, then cut into bars.
**Note: If an 8 oz bag of toffee bits is all that is
available, use only 1 1/4 cups with the condensed
milk and the remaining scant 1/4 cup on top.
Makes 36 bars
