~ Brown Edge Saucies ~
2 cups sifted flour
1 t baking powder
1/2 t baking soda
1/2 t salt
1/2/t nutmeg
1/2 t cinnamon
1/4 t cloves
1/2 cup shortening
1 cup sugar
1 egg
1 t vanilla
1 cup canned applesauce
Preheat oven to 350F.
Measure flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt,
cinnamon, nutmeg, and ground cloves into sifter;
set aside. Cream shortening until soft, add
sugar, gradually creaming after each addition
until well-blended. Stir in egg and vanilla,
beat until mixture is light and fluffy. Sift
and add dry ingredients alternately with
applesauce, blending well after each addition.
Drop batter by heaping teaspoonfuls onto lightly
greased cookie sheets, about 2 inches apart.
Bake for 12 minutes or until cookies are
lightly browned around edge. Loosen at once
from cookie sheet by running spatula under
each cookie. Cool on wire racks. Store cookies
in airtight container to keep them soft.
Makes 3 dozen cookies

For gift giving, package cookies in a
cellophane bag. Place cellophane bag
in sponge painted gift box. Use homespun
fabric or Christmas ribbon for the bow.
