Layered Patchwork Soup
~ Mix in a Jar ~
1/2 cup barley
1/2 cup dried split peas
1/2 cup uncooked white rice
1/2 cup dry lentils
~Seasoning Packet~
1 tbsp dried parsley
1 tsp granulated garlic
1 tsp ground black pepper
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp garlic powder
1 tsp Italian seasoning
1 tsp dried sage
Layer in wide-mouth 1-quart canning jar in order listed above
Combine seasonings. Store in a resealable plastic bag
Attach seasoning packet to jar *OR* if there is room
place seasoning packet inside jar with beans
Put the lid on the jar and tie a homespun fabric bow around the lid
As an added touch, tie a wooden spoon to the lid
Attach jar labels to the jar with the following instructions

~ Layered Patchwork Soup ~
1 jar soup mix
10 cups water
1 medium onion, chopped
Empty jar into a colander, rinse and pick over beans
Place beans in a large stockpot and cover with
10 cups water. Stir in onion and the seasoning packet
Bring to a boil. Lower heat, cover and simmer for
1 hour, stirring occasionally. Check after 30 minutes
and add additional water if necessary
Simmer until beans are tender
